Support for Schools

We support the NHSS (National Healthy Schools Standard) in Portsmouth, by offering workshops around healthy eating in the initial Healthy Schools training days. We act as point of contact for further training of school staff and engagement with parents based on the balance of good health, this can include practical cooking sessions, demonstrations and presentations. We are available to deliver classroom sessions in partnership with teachers using the food mat and replica food, and have produced an information pack for primary schools.

The team is able to assist governors to devise a whole school policy on healthy eating and support the school in implementing any changes that may be required. Team members are involved with the education service in tendering and setting standards for the school meals contractors.

The Food and Health Group offer a number of training packages for schools that underpin and support the work being done by Healthy Harvey.

The team have also produced a range of resources for schools including, colouring sheets, word searches, fruit & vegetable quizzes, bingo and pictures of balanced and unbalanced lunchboxes together with a range of leaflets and booklets. A computer game "Fruit and Veg Frenzy" has been produced in association with LimeKnight Productions. Fit Food Fast, a recipe file with a collection of more than 100 simple, economical, healthy recipes is also available to schools who cook with their children as part of the curriculum or in out of school activities.

HIDS is able to signpost schools to other initiatives such as "Water is Cool", "Fruit in School", "School Milk Schemes" and Growing Clubs. The team also have good links with the school nurses, looked after children, teenage pregnancy team and Sex Sense.

HIDS also supports healthy schools in the delivery of smoking, alcohol and substance misuse workshops across a great range of city schools. Training and support in these areas are also offered and delivered to both parents and teachers.
