Adolescent Health

The City of Portsmouth is a Department of Health, Teenage Health Demonstration Site. As such, Portsmouth has received specific funding over a two-year period (November 2006-November 2008) to pilot different and innovative ways of delivering health services for young people and working with young people around their health.
 
The 4 aims of the pilot are:

• To test the 'Life Check' on-line individual health assessment for 12-13 year olds, as described in Our Health, Our Care, Our Say
• To demonstrate how to ensure health information, advice and guidance can be delivered to young people more effectively in non-health settings, particularly targeting the 30% most vulnerable young people in each site
• To demonstrate how best to configure health services to target and meet the health needs of all young people
• To provide evidence of processes that work to support young people who have had an abortion, and teenage parents, in avoiding repeat pregnancy

Expected outcomes of the pilot are to:

• Achieve positive health outcomes for young people based on a young people centred approach
• Ensure the processes of engagement within our communities enable all to develop the skills, understanding and knowledge to make informed and effective health decisions
• Deliver effective outreach to improve accessibility and quality of services for young people, especially our most marginalized young people.

The Adolescent Health Team is the new team in the Health Improvement & Development Service, created to support the roll-out of the Teenage Health Demonstration Site and achieve the pilot aims. We also have team members who work in Health and the voluntary sector. After 2 years we hope to have improved the health of young people in Portsmouth and the services delivered for them.
