Substance-Related Harm

HIDS Business Plan:

Outcome objective 1 - To raise levels of non-smoking and increase the number of smoke-free environments

Outcome objective 2 - To reduce the harm from substance misuse and promote sensible drinking

Reducing substance use is a key target in the Every Child Matters outcomes framework under 'Be Healthy'. Priority national targets have been set for reducing smoking, drinking, Class A drug taking and the regular use of illicit drugs, especially among the most vulnerable.

Substance-related harm has a major impact on quality of life in Portsmouth with alcohol misuse being a major cause of violent crime in the city. HIDS is at the forefront of tackling these issues by providing information and advice on all areas of substance misuse, particularly amongst young people

Substance misuse issues are looked at in many ways by HIDS but we are always looking to involve young people in their own development. Peer-led projects include the design of drugs posters by pupils at King Richard school and cigarette packs highlighting the dangers of smoking designed and developed with the help of pupils from Admiral Lord Nelson school and children from the city's play and youth facilities.

Early 2006 also saw the production of a young person's health magazine 'Explode', which has all the articles designed and developed by young people from across the city, targeting the health issues they felt most relevant to themselves and their peers. This was distributed to all year six and seven pupils.

Strong links have been formed with colleges from Healthy Schools, and multi-agency projects such as the 'smoke free school awards' have been developed to support their work in schools. Links have also been formed with other agencies across Portsmouth including the Drug Action Team to deliver awareness training for both adults working with young people and for young people themselves.

HIDS employs a dedicated worker for young people and alcohol. Working closely with agencies, projects and groups of young people from across the city, developing initiatives that

enable and educate young people about alcohol misuse. A competition in local schools led to the adoption of the "Think, don't drink" slogan and logo promoting alcohol awareness.

England is Smokefree

The smokefree law is the biggest piece of public health legislation for fifty years (since the Clean Air Act of 1956) and will protect thousands of lives every year from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

On 1st July 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces smokefree. HIDS is at the forefront of working with local businesses and communities to ensure a healthier environment so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from second hand smoke. We support people aiming to give up smoking. We campaign to discourage young people from taking up smoking through working directly with children in schools and other youth settings, and through the new Smoke Free Schools Award
