Healthy Eating, Exercise and Oral Health Project

This two-year project, funded by Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (£245,000) and Single Regeneration Budget (£30,000) was commissioned by the Local Strategic Partnership to run from April 2004 until March 2006.

The aim of the project was to address rising levels of obesity and poor oral health amongst children and young people, particularly in parts of the city where health inequalities were most prevalent.

Key elements of the project have included: -
  • Employment of local people on a part time basis to act as Healthy Eating Champions
  • Free certificated nutritional training for community members
  • The development of a breakfast club with the primary aim of promoting healthy eating and good oral health practices.
  • Recruitment of a dentist to provide NHS dental treatment to the target group.
  • Piloting a fruit and vegetable bag delivery scheme for low-income groups.
  • Development of a range of growing projects
  • Providing support, training and resources to other professionals in the city.
  • Development of a range of resources for use in the community.
  • Development of strong partnership links with other departments and agencies e.g., healthy schools, family learning, Portsmouth Primary Care Trust, local growing projects, school meals team, community dietitians, fruit in schools coordinators and the Dental Health Team.
  • A strong emphasis on community involvement.
