Exercise, Diet & Health

E3 Project
(Eating, Exercise and Enjoyment)

The idea behind the project was to get young people thinking about the link between diet and exercise on their health, plus realising that both physical activity and healthy eating can be fun. The project was open to local year 7 pupils as research shows this is where children can fall out of regularly participating in sporting activity.

The project was a partnership project between HIDS, leisure services, employees from a local healthy living centre and its artist in residence, Jeannie Kerswell. The programme was funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

During February half-term in 2006 three introductory sessions were held and these were followed by five consecutive Saturday morning sessions in Feb/March 06.

Each day the sessions were different but as the programme shows (Download the E3 Participants Programme - PDF 78kb) all the activities related to diet and exercise. A range of healthy snacks were available each day for the children to try.

Throughout the sessions various taster activities were provided, these ranged from a healthy walk (historic dockyard), fencing, trampolining, and boxercise to gym induction. Digital imagery, t-shirt design and a giant collage along with nutrition and cooking also formed part of the programme.

The sessions have been both educational and fun. All participants enjoyed the E3 project and feedback was very positive. One parent says her daughter 'now goes to Fit Kids on a Thursday' and another praised the project and asked 'will there be a similar programme during the summer holidays?'
