The Eat Well Age Well Programme
Over 50s can Eat Well and Age Well in Portsmouth.
In a bid to improve the health and wellbeing of the over 50s in Portsmouth, older people are being encouraged to attend the Eat Well Age Well programme that promotes healthy eating, wellbeing and physical exercise at centres around the city. The areas targeted are some of the most deprived in income, health and living environment, and also areas where new healthy living centres and new community centres have been set up.
The programme gives us the opportunity to work in partnership with other agencies to publicise their services for older people. This could include Portsmouth Primary Care Trust with foot educators and falls prevention, Portsmouth Hospitals with community dieticians, and Hampshire Constabulary with the Safer Neighbourhood campaign. It also informs residents in the city of services within the city council such as housing; through energy conservation, promoting the winter warmth campaign, and trading standards / environmental health; promoting food campaigns and food hygiene.
The informative and fun weekly programme of between 8 - 14 sessions is giving the people in the community an opportunity to socialise and try out new activities in order to improve or maintain a healthy lifestyle. The sessions consist of healthy cookery and microwave demonstrations, healthy walks, tai chi and information on healthy eating and specific dietary needs, winter warmth, falls prevention and feeling safe in the community. The benefits include a healthier diet, becoming more aware of grants and services that were available to them, socialising and making use of the community cafés with newly found friends and more physical activity.
