Transport and Getting About

On this page: Getting about guide
Portsmouth City Council has produced a "Getting About Guide" full of travel information for older and disabled people. The guide aims to help older and disabled people use both the public and voluntary transport services in Portsmouth and the surrounding area more easily.

It is divided into three sections covering the types of transport available, help with transport costs, and contact details for organisations that may be able to advise you.

Please contact the Passenger Transport Section of the Engineering and Design Service of Portsmouth City Council on 023 9284 1346 for a copy of the guide.

Transport to Hospital
The following guidelines will help you identify the most appropriate service to use.
  • Could the journey be made by some form of public transport, or with the help of a relative or friend?
  • If not, could the Patient Transport Service provide the transport? If you are not sure whether you are eligible to use this service, then ask your GP, dentist or consultant who arranges this transport.
  • Portsmouth Dial-A-Ride may be able to help (see below)
  • If you are attending hospital for an appointment and you are on a low income or on income support, you may be able to claim the cost of your transport. Ask at the hospital reception desk for a claim form.
  • Age Concern may be able to help if you are over 65. Phone Tom Shepherd on 023 9286 2121
