Home from Hospital Service

The British Red Cross run Home from Hospital Service provides trained volunteers who are able to provide practical and social support to older people for up to four weeks following discharge from hospital. They can:
  • Help you get your home ready
  • Do essential light shopping
  • Collect prescriptions, pensions, and pay bills
  • Help to regain confidence
  • Make a social visit
  • Help with surgical stockings and foot washing. Support will be extended for up to six weeks.
They make every effort to make sure you get the same person visiting you. The volunteers are unable to perform tasks for which they are not trained, and will not:
  • Undertake personal care
  • Administer any medication or change dressings
  • Lift or move someone
  • Carry out large shopping requests
  • Witness legal documents
  • receive payment for services
  • Carry out household chores
Any information about you or conversations with volunteers or staff will be kept in strict confidence.

Further information is available from the Home from Hospital Service Manager on 07801 672682 (there is an answer-phone to take messages).
