Carers Rights Day
Every year in December there is a Carers' Rights Day, which aims to increase the take-up of benefits, ensure that carers access their rights under relevant legislation, raise awareness of the needs of carers and to help individuals recognise themselves as carers.
Every year more than 40% of carers providing substantial amounts of care start or stop caring, i.e. over 2 million people begin a caring role every year. Those new to caring need straightforward and accessible information about their entitlements.
Estimates suggest that 40-60% of disability benefits go unclaimed. There are no statistics available on the take-up of carers' benefits, but the take-up rate of disability benefits directly affects a carers' ability to claim benefits.
