Get A Break

A major risk for carers is that you become socially isolated. Looking after anyone, no matter what illness or disabilities they are suffering from, can take more and more of your time.

Friends and neighbours might stop calling round or invitations may not arrive as those around you struggle to understand and cope with the changing situation. You may also not feel comfortable leaving those you care for alone at home, feeling guilty or worrying that they may come to some harm. Managing on your own will only increase the stress placed on you. Stopping yourself from becoming isolated is a challenge but is an essential part of coping with caring.

Make sure that you get a break, time to yourself with no interruptions. It does not have to be a trip to the moon; it might just be the time to visit a friend or taking a long bath. It might be a proper holiday that the whole family can enjoy. Remember that the break can be beneficial to all, offering different stimulation and a chance to have a chat about each other's news.

Secondly, carers stress the benefit they have found from talking to others in a similar situation. Think about it, other carers are quite likely to know the answer to your problem or at least know someone who does. They've been there, done it and very often bought the T-shirt. Carers' support groups are many and varied and can be a valuable source of support and a place to chat with those who understand the many challenges, no matter how large or small. They can be based around the illness or disability, or can be more general, more about being a carer. The Carers Centre has a list of local groups that is kept as up-to-date as possible, call us and we can put you in touch with a group near you.

Third, if possible, share the responsibility! Family and friends may not understand how hard you are finding things, unless you tell them. You never know, they might be willing to help but don't want to interfere, they may be waiting to be asked.

Remember to be kind to yourself!
